How to make a collage from seven photos

  1. Open all seven. Drop them on the collage or use Choose photos; paste works too.
  2. Pick one of the three. One large, six small for a day with one great photo; A banner over six for a wide view and six details; Seven, unevenly for mixed shapes.
  3. Check the small slots. Tap a slot to see how much of its photo shows. Below 40% the panel suggests a layout with a better-shaped slot.
  4. Save. Pick a size in Layout and press Save. The file is drawn from your originals, one at a time.

Seven is a banner and a grid

Seven photos split naturally into one and six. A banner over six puts a full-width photo across the top — a third of a square, a quarter of a story — and a two-by-three or three-by-two grid underneath. It reads like a page from a printed album: the scene, then the details. One large, six small does the same job with the lead in the corner, which keeps a portrait taller.

Seven, unevenly is for a set that does not split cleanly. Its rows have different heights and widths, so a panorama, two portraits and four squares can all find a slot that suits them.

Every slot stays readable

Every layout in this catalogue is checked when the site is built: no slot's short edge may be less than 22% of the frame's short edge. On a 1080-pixel square that is 238 pixels — about the smallest size at which a face still reads on a phone. A layout that fails the check is not offered.

If your seven photos are all wide, try the tall post: the banner gets taller and the grid cells get closer to the shape of the photos.

Questions people ask about this one

Why only three layouts for seven?

Each layout is drawn by hand three times, once per shape, and checked so no slot is too small to read. Three is the number that pass with room to spare.

Can I add an eighth photo later?

Yes. On this page the layout stays at seven slots and the extra photo waits in the tray; switch to an eight-photo layout or the home page's Grow with my photos to fit it.

Do the photos get compressed?

Only once, when you save, at the quality shown in the Save step (92% by default for JPG). PNG is lossless.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The page has no server behind it to upload to.

Can I print a seven-photo collage?

Yes. Pick 6 × 4, 4 × 6, 5 × 7 or A4 in the size list; the file is made at 300 pixels per inch and the Save step lists how sharply each slot will print.
