How to make a family photo collage

  1. Open everyone. Twelve to thirty photos. The group photo first — it goes in the big slot.
  2. Pick a family set. Lead and eleven, Lead and nine, Twelve unevenly, or a Banner over eight, in the Layout step.
  3. Keep faces whole. With many small slots, press Keep faces whole in the Photos step. It moves photos so faces stay inside their slots and says which slots are still too small.
  4. Pick the page. Tall post for sharing, A4 for printing and framing.
  5. Save. Every photo is read again at full size, one at a time, so thirty photos save on an ordinary phone.

One photo of everyone, and everyone else

A family collage nearly always has one photo that matters most — the group, everyone in it — and a crowd of others: the children, the grandparents, the dog. The lead layouts give the group photo the room of three or four slots and lay the rest in rows underneath. One large, eleven small is the default; for more than twelve, the generated One large and the rest layout does the same for any count up to thirty.

The title band at the top says Our family to start with, or मेरा परिवार in Hindi; type over it with the family name.

Faces at the size of a fingernail

With twelve or more photos, each small slot is a few hundred pixels across and a head is easy to cut through. The face finder fixes that: it runs in this tab, finds a box round each face and slides each photo so the boxes stay inside the slot. When a slot is simply smaller than a face, it says which one in a sentence, with a button that jumps to that slot.

It is a 224 KB download, stated before anything is fetched, and it is never run without a press.

Questions people ask about this one

How many photos can a family collage have?

Up to thirty on one page. For more, the Save step splits them into a set of collages.

Can I print it on A4?

Yes. A4 is 2480 × 3508 pixels at 300 to the inch, and PDF gives one A4 page.

Is the face finder required?

No. Every slot can be framed by dragging; the face finder only saves time.

Can the title be in Hindi?

Yes. The Text step switches it to मेरा परिवार, or type your own in the हिन्दी typeface.

Are the photos uploaded?

No. They stay on your device the whole time.

Can I make one collage per branch of the family?

Yes. Several collages in the Save step splits the open photos, in tray order, into a numbered set of four, six, nine or twelve each, saved as a ZIP or one PDF.
