How to make a WhatsApp DP collage

  1. Choose DP or status. For your DP opens a 1080 × 1080 square with the circle drawn on it; For your status opens a 1080 × 1920 story with the name bar and reply bar shaded.
  2. Open your photos. For the DP, the Layout step offers only layouts whose every slot keeps at least half of itself inside the circle.
  3. Keep faces in the middle. The inner dashed circle marks the centre 80%. The sentence under the overlay names any slot the circle hides, and any face that crosses the line once the face finder has run.
  4. Save and set it. Save, then choose the picture as your profile photo or post it as a status. On a phone, Share opens the share sheet directly.

The honest trade with a DP collage

WhatsApp shows a profile photo as a circle — in chats, in the contact list, at the top of a conversation. Everything in the corners of the square is cut off. A four-slot grid survives that well, because each quarter keeps most of itself inside the circle. A tall layout with slots along the edges does not: whole photos disappear.

So the DP preset filters the layouts. A layout is offered only if every one of its slots has at least half its area inside the circle. Thirty-nine drawn layouts become twenty-nine, and the ones that are left are the ones that will still look like a collage at the size of a fingertip.

Where the numbers come from

The circle is a fact of how the app draws profile photos; the recommended upload size of 1080 square comes from size guides rather than from WhatsApp itself, and the status bar heights are approximate. The overlay says so, and says when it was last checked, rather than presenting them as exact.

A 1080-pixel upload is sharper than the 640 pixels WhatsApp is often said to display, and it costs nothing — the app makes its own smaller copy.

Questions people ask about this one

What size should a WhatsApp DP be?

Upload a square; 1080 × 1080 is sharp and is what this page saves. It is displayed as a circle, so keep faces in the middle.

Why are some layouts missing on the DP preset?

They have a slot that is more than half outside the circle, which would hide most of that photo in your profile picture.

Is the circle in the saved picture?

No. The circle and the shading are only on the stage. The file is a plain square or story.

Can I make a status with many photos?

Yes. The status preset is a full 1080 × 1920 story; any layout works, and the bars are shaded so you can keep faces out of them.

Are my photos sent anywhere?

No. Nothing leaves your phone until you choose to share the finished picture yourself.
