How to make a polaroid collage

  1. Open your photos. Each one is laid on the page as a whole print — nothing is cropped, so a tall photo makes a tall print.
  2. Shuffle the pile. The dice deals a new pile. The same pile comes back every time from the same shuffle, so an undo returns it exactly.
  3. Move any print. Drag it, turn it from the handle at the top, resize it from the corner, or use the arrow and bracket keys. Bring to front lifts it above the others.
  4. Add a title and save. A title band at the top or bottom, in the Text step, reads like writing on the page the prints are lying on.

Prints, not slots

Most collages cut each photo to fit a slot. A polaroid collage does the opposite: the photo keeps its own shape and the frame is built round it — an even white border on three sides and a deeper one at the bottom, the way an instant print looks. Nothing is cropped, which is the point when the photos are of people and you do not want to choose what to lose.

The Polaroid style family sets the print edge, a soft drop shadow, wide spacing and a chalk-white ground. Every one of those is an ordinary setting in the Style step and can be changed.

Freeform, if a pile is too loose

Stack mode drops the prints with slight random turns. Freeform mode starts them square to the page and leaves the placing to you, which is closer to a scrapbook. Both keep every photo whole, and switching to Grid mode later cuts them into a layout again with your framing intact.

Writing a caption on each print is not built yet; a title and a caption for the whole page are.

Questions people ask about this one

Are my photos cropped in a polaroid collage?

No. In Stack and Freeform modes every photo is shown whole, at its own proportions.

Can I write under each photo?

Not yet. You can add a title and a caption for the whole collage in the Text step.

How do I get a new arrangement?

Press Shuffle, or R on a keyboard. Each shuffle is one undo step.

Can I print it?

Yes — 6 × 4, 4 × 6, 5 × 7 or A4 at 300 pixels per inch, or a PDF at the real paper size.

Is it uploaded?

No. The prints are drawn in this tab.

How many photos make a good pile?

Five to nine. With more, the prints get smaller and overlap more; Freeform lets you spread them out by hand.
